Volunteering

Most of the work at SAMREC is done by our volunteers who have specialised training in many aspects of marine bird rehabilitation. Our volunteers are equipped to handle daily incidents as well as oil spill disasters and other emergency situations. All our teachers who facilitate the Seaschool are volunteers too.

Become a valued volunteer

We always need more volunteers regardless of age. Teenagers and students who don’t mind getting their hands and clothes wet or dirty and pensioners who enjoy interacting with people are all invited to volunteer. Volunteers who work with the animals should be 16 years old and have a passion for the environment. Our volunteers rise up through the different ranks from Chinstrap to Emperor. Emperor status is achieved through many hours of dedicated hard work. Volunteers are supervised at all times and receive on job training as well as the relevant learning material.
